Saving energy and using renewable energies

As part of our CO2vision, we began reducing our annual emissions in the areas we can directly influence back in 2008. Between 2008 and 2020, we reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 36% as part of our CO2vision.

With our climate strategy from 2022, we are taking a holistic and consistent approach to the issue in the Coop Group. We are committed to science-based climate targets and are reaffirming our commitment to effective climate protection by signing the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Our goal: to reduce a further 42% of direct CO2e emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2030 - in line with the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement. Scope 1 includes all greenhouse gas emissions caused by directly controlled sources owned by the company, such as lorries or heating systems. Scope 2 includes all indirect greenhouse gas emissions caused by the purchase of energy, such as electricity or heat. We are also tackling the reduction of emissions in our value chains, in "Scope 3": we analyse our entire footprint and derive specific emission reduction targets from this. We are increasingly working with suppliers who are also committed to science-based climate targets. This is particularly relevant as Scope 3, upstream in the supply chain, is where the majority of emissions are generated.

About the Coop Group's footprint

We rely on electricity from renewable and low-emission energy sources. We are continuing to expand the installation of photovoltaic systems on the roofs of our sales outlets, production facilities and distribution centres. Our goal is to cover 41% of our electricity requirements in Switzerland with our own photovoltaic systems by 2050. We want to build 620,000 square metres of our own PV systems by 2033  . This corresponds to an expansion of almost 250% over the next 10 years.

And by consistently implementing efficiency measures such as the use of efficient lighting and electronic devices, we are further reducing our electricity consumption.

We consistently use renewable energies for heating in all new buildings and renovations. In our distribution centres and production facilities, we are continuously switching to renewable heat, and in rented properties we largely dispense with fossil fuels.

In order to reduce emissions in the upstream stages of our value chain in the long term, we work with strategically relevant suppliers who are committed to science-based climate targets. We implement projects to reduce CO2e emissions along our supply chains.

In the following areas, we are focussing on responsible energy use in order to implement our strategy:
